The WNT was on home soil this past week in the WBSC Softball Americas Qualifier in Surrey, BC at Softball City. The team electrified the home crowd all week with very solid pitching, defense and timely hitting. The event culminated with a 7-0 victory over Brazil to clinch its berth in 2020.
This will be the first time Softball will be back on the Olympic program since 2008; Canada has 3 players who participated on the ‘08 squad who will be leaders for the 2020 team. Canada joins Japan, USA, Italy and Mexico who have already qualified for the event, with one more spot up for grabs in the Asian/Oceania Qualifier later this September. The Women’s Softball competition is scheduled to be played from August 22-28, 2020.
Mizuno is very proud to be the On-Field Apparel Supplier of the WNT, providing pants, socks and custom uniforms. The partnership between Mizuno and Softball Canada has been a long one that has evolved over the years and we at Mizuno could not be happier to be a small part of the success the program has had this summer. Mizuno Canada’s Director of Sales & Marketing Team Sports Dave Bartlett said, “We are so proud of the Women’s National Team. To be a partner of theirs for so many years, and to have them qualify on home soil was really something special. We take great pride that the ladies were able to compete confidently and at their best while using our Mizuno product”.
Softball Canada’s Women’s National Team has been training full-time to prepare for this opportunity and reached all its performance targets in the 2019 season. The team is currently ranked #3 in the Women’s Softball World Rankings and is ready to compete for gold across all international competitions. Gilles LeBlanc, Softball Canada’s Manager of Marketing and Communications said “Our team has worked extremely hard to get to this point and has built something very special on and off the field. Mizuno Canada has played an important role in making our athletes feel comfortable and confident in competition. We greatly appreciate the long-standing partnership we have enjoyed with Mizuno Canada and we look forward to continuing to work together to support our team’s journey.”
Mizuno is also very proud to individually sponsor five athletes on the WNT. Holly Speers, Danielle Lawrie, Larissa Franklin, Janet Leung and Natalie Wideman are all Mizuno Ambassadors and use Mizuno equipment in order to play their best. Adam Vella, Field Marketing Specialist at Mizuno Canada said, “Having worked closely with all of these women over the past few years, it has been extremely rewarding to watch them achieve their individual and team goals. They are all amazing and talented players but what makes them stand out the most is their character off the field. We wish them all the luck in the world next season.”
Mizuno looks forward to working with Softball Canada in helping them prepare for their quest of a gold medal.
