Canadian Adults and Kids Spending Less Time in Nature, Poll Finds

This year, Coleman Canada declares July 14, 2017 as National Get Outside Day – a day dedicated to exploring this wonderful country and celebrating what it means to be Canadian!

TORONTO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–While the vast majority of Canadians (96 per cent) agree today’s kids are spending less time outdoors, few adults are setting a good example as three in 10 Canadians (29 per cent) spend less than 30 minutes outside per week, a poll released today finds.

The 2017 edition of the Coleman Canada Outdoor Report, a survey of over 1500 Canadian adults and their outdoor habits hosted by Angus Reid Forum, also found that 84 per cent of those polled feel that they would like to spend more time outdoors but are too busy with work (46 per cent) or with personal and family schedules (51 per cent).

Surprisingly, nearly two-thirds of Canadians (64 per cent) are enjoying the open-air for less than two hours per week, despite nearly all respondents acknowledging that being outdoors has many health benefits including enhancing overall well-being (98 per cent) and reducing stress (95 per cent).

Coleman Canada encourages Canadians to Get Outside

To encourage Canadians to enjoy the outdoors and reap the wide-ranging benefits of time spent outside, Coleman Canada is continuing its Get Outside movement, now in its fourth year. Coleman is declaring July 14th National Get Outside Day to remind Canadians that being outdoors is part of our national identity and to encourage them to make the time to get outside.

Although Canadians covet our great outdoors, almost three-quarters of respondents (73 per cent) complain about the weather and cite conditions – being too hot or too cold – as reasons for keeping them indoors. Other reasons include too many bugs (43 per cent), not knowing what to do (33 per cent) and, for 21 per cent of millennials, not having Wi-Fi was a factor.  About the Get Outside Survey

From April 12th to April 13th 2017 an online survey was conducted among 1,508 randomly selected Canadian adults who are Angus Reid Forum panelists. The margin of error—which measures sampling variability—is +/- 2.5%, 19 times out of 20. The results have been statistically weighted according to education, age, gender and region (and in Quebec, language) Census data to ensure a sample representative of the entire adult population of Canada.
