adidas Launches First-Ever Upcycled Golf Shoe for the U.S. Open

adidas Golf continues to create fresh and interesting versions of its TOUR360 shoe. The latest limited edition, the TOUR360 XT Parley, showcases the brand’s commitment to the sustainability of our oceans. The entire upper of the shoe is constructed of yarns spun from upcycled plastic waste intercepted from beaches and coastal communities. Fittingly, adidas is launching the shoe on Monday, June 10 to kick off U.S. Open week at Pebble Beach.

Parley for the Oceans is a global network of creators, thinkers, and leaders from creative industries, brands, government, and environmental groups that have come together to raise awareness about the fragility of the oceans. According to Parley, an estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic finds its way to oceans every year. A significant percentage washes up onto shore but most of it collects in five slow-moving whirlpools in the oceans around the world. Over time, sunlight photodegrades the plastic into small pieces. Aquatic life and seabirds often mistake the small pieces of plastic for food. In addition, tens of thousands of whales are said to become entangled in plastic marine debris every year.

Parley’s AIR Strategy encourages people to avoid plastic, intercept plastic waste, and find ways to redesign the material itself. The organization’s mission fits with adidas’ strategy to use 100 percent recycled polyester in its apparel and footwear by 2024. The upcycled yarns on the TOUR360 XT Parley footwear takes adidas one step closer to that goal. While this shoe is a first for golf, adidas and Parley have partnered on several projects in recent years, including UltraBoost running shoes, gym apparel, and jerseys for Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

“Our company is extremely focused on sustainability and we wanted to incorporate that mission into our sport,” said Masun Denison, global footwear director, adidas Golf. “This is the first golf shoe we’ve ever made that incorporates upcycled materials and this is just the beginning. In a sport that’s played outdoors and where sustainability is often under the microscope, we feel this is a massive step forward for the game.”

The TOUR360 XT Parley features a striking ocean blue and aqua green color scheme. The upcycled upper sits on adidas’ full-length BOOST midsole and TOUR360 XT cleated outsole with X-Traxion technology. A sock-like opening gives the shoe a modern streetwear vibe, while the 360Wrap provides stability and support in the midfoot area for a locked-in feel. It also comes with a one-year waterproof guarantee.

Look for limited quantities of the TOUR360 XT Parley to be available at the U.S. Open merchandise tent at Pebble Beach and on adidas.com starting June 10 and 8 a.m. PT. Select retailers will also stock the shoe beginning June 12 and certain adidas players will lace up the shoe throughout U.S. Open week.
